What Is Sculptra?

Sculptra is a unique dermal filler made of poly-L-lactic acid. This is similar to a material that is commonly used as a suture in surgeries. This material is broken down and dissolved by your body with time. As a result of that process, it stimulates collagen. Because of this, Sculptra is considered to be a bio-stimulatory filler.

What Is the Treatment Like?

The treatment process for Sculptra injections is similar to other types of filler. Dr. Choe starts by ensuring the injection sites are clean and may numb the area. She then injects the filler under the skin using a very fine needle. The amount injected varies and is calculated to create results that look natural while bringing out the best in your natural features. A single treatment session is quick and comfortable, lasting less than half an hour in most cases.

After treatment, there is no required downtime. Most patients can go right back to their routine, but we do recommend avoiding any strenuous activity for about 24 hours after treatment. If any bruising or swelling occurs (which is normal), it should fade within a couple of days. Massaging the treated areas is recommended to stimulate collagen production.

When Will I See Results With Sculptra?

Unlike the more popular hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers like Restylane or Juvederm with which you’ll see the results right away, Sculptra will take a few months to get a natural and gradual improvement as your own collagen is stimulated. Depending on the results you want, you may need a series of injections. Dr. Choe carefully builds each treatment regimen to give you optimal results with as few injections as possible.

How Long Does Sculptra Last?

Because it is your own collagen that creates the filling effect, Sculptra has been found to last about 2 years. It may last longer than that because when studied, at the end of 2 years, about 80% of patients were still happy with their results. But just as your own collagen degrades as you age, the collagen created by Sculptra will deflate as well with time. When results begin to fade, patients have a few options. They can have another Sculptra treatment, or they can try a different filler or nonsurgical option. At each new visit, we ensure you are continually matched with the best option for your goals.

Is Sculptra Right for Me?

This filler is not for you if you want immediate results for an event, though it is commonly injected with an HA filler so you can get immediate benefit and long-term collagen stimulation. It also is not an option for every area. Finally, because it relies on stimulating your own collagen, the end result can be variable depending on how your body responds to the product and may be better suited for younger patients. Many patients have treatment before wrinkles begin appearing as a “prejuvenation” solution to maintain a youthful look as they age.
